WHITE SANDS, N.M. -- (Far right) Maj. Misty Sorensen, 926th Group process manager, and family members participate in the Bataan Memorial Death March at the missile range Mar. 17.

The annual event memoralizes those who sacrificed their lives defending the Philippine Islands during World War II.

"There was an amazing amount of cohesion among the almost 6,000 marchers in the feeling that it was much bigger than any of us individually," Sorensen said.

"It was an incredibly humbling experience to shake the hands of Bataan survivors and have them thank us for our service and for marching for them."

Sorensen and her family carried a banner of a coworker's grandfathers who were forced to march. One of the men escaped and the other spent years in a prisoner of war camp.
